The Network Event Kit (NEK)

The Network Event Kit is hardware and software to deploy event networks for open source, open content, open hardware.

It purpose it to be fast to deploy and low cost. The gives access to internet via a wired and wireless infrastructure. The works on opensource software and open documentation.

However it more the just this kit. The idea behind it is to create cooperation and train people to use open software on events.

The NEK Idea

The idea to have a mobile hardware setup to offer network on events and train people to use it.

  • learning *BSD networking from base to expert level
  • creating documentation for hands-on shops
  • giving hands-on training
  • training trainers in presentation and teaching skills
  • technical support from experts in network security
  • creating a usecase of BSD-osses
  • offering open [source|hardware|content] events a well working network environment.

  • emmbedded boards (wrap/soekris) in outdoor casings
  • 3 2.4 Ghz omni's (10Db-14Db)
  • 2 5Ghz omni's (8-15Db)
  • 5 10-100 Mbit switches
  • utp cables

Software

  • FreeBSD
  • TinyBSD
  • carp + pf firewall
  • monitoring (cacti,nagios,mrtg,snort)
